Heart’s Delight, Trinity Bay
Grandfather “Pop” E.J. Sooley’s homestead is a living tribute to the colourful heritage of Newfoundland’s outport communities. Being outdoors here, you are immersed in an unmistakably maritime sense of place. Go beyond the deck and lawn to the beach to understand what coastal truly means. Indoors, the space is filled with colourful artifacts that perfectly illustrate Eddy-John’s life as a fisherman in the 1930s, though the mindful interior design is very clearly the work of his fisherwife. Every nostalgic detail serves a purpose: the separate cold and hot water taps (though the plumbing is completely modern), the deep clawfoot tub, the playful array of jellybean colours and even the traditional (if somewhat quirky) daybed in the the kitchen are all evocative reminders of how time passes both quickly and slowly here in Heart’s Delight.
