Elliston, Bonavista Peninsula
Teapots and puffins and icebergs, oh my! The location of the Anchor House is quintessential Newfoundland, from the (rare!) sandy beach nearby to the whales that puff and spray in earshot of the deck right down to the collection of folk art inside. Elliston is a quirky village on the Peninsula that’s known for its historic rough-hewn root cellars, and it’s worth seeking them out; some of them are still in use today (though Anchor has its own modern refrigerator, if you prefer). While the traditional biscuit box architecture and expansive deck and yard lend themselves to outdoor living, it’s cozy and comfortable inside with cloud-soft beds and crisp white linens. It’s very tempting to stay in, but the call of cliffside scrambling and the sound of the waves are impossible to resist.
